WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND: JERSEY CITY STREET FESTIVAL THIS SATURDAY!

BY JESSICA HARTLAND

Looking for a way to forget the work week? Need to find a fun place for the kids? Just want to let loose and have some fun? The destination is only a PATH train stop away.

Jersey City’s 2nd annual downtown street festival is taking place on Saturday, September 29th.  This free event, being held on Newark Avenue between Grove Street and Jersey Avenue, will comprise of an array of activities fit for all age groups.  With well over 100 participating businesses, vendors, and food sources, running out of options will never be a problem.

The festival, organized by the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District (HDSID), was created to showcase the history and current residents of Jersey City and its local businesses.  It will feature many independent artists, as well as local food trucks, vendors with the latest fall fashion, and, of course, a rockin’ lineup of live music.

“I heard about the festival for the first time from a friend and I was so upset I didn’t know about it the previous year,” said Jersey City native, Liora Attias.  “I’m definitely going to make sure my Saturday is free to enjoy everything that is there, and it’ll be a blast for my son.”

The children don’t get to have all the fun, however.  Although there is face painting and a house bounce, the organizers didn’t forget about the adults!  There will be activities for the daredevils, including a mechanical bull, as well as tents with vendors selling food and alcohol for those who just want to relax.

“Once I heard about a mechanical bull, I was in,” said college student Regan Loula. “Me and my friends are constantly talking about trying to find a place with one, but now they have it in Jersey City… that’s a win-win for us!”

With an estimated 15,000 attendees at last year’s event, the HDSID hopes to serve thousands more the second time around.  The extensive list of sponsors, such as Capital One Bank, Verizon Fios, Yelp, and Jersey City Independent are also helping with achieving that goal through advertisements that are hard to miss in the PATH stations and all throughout Jersey City.

This rain or shine event starts at 11am and runs until 10pm.  So gather your friends and family, prepare your stomach for all the great food, and get ready for a day to remember.
